# Color

We have a whole pallet of color at brewing. It is possible to calculate the color before we even start with brewing. So if we want to make a special style of beer we need to find the right malt mixture to fit in color limits of this exact beer.

#### 1. Units

°L (degrees lovibond) it is used for grain color
MCU (malt color units) it is used for color of beer (but it is not so percise above value 10,5)
SRM (standard reference method) it is used for color of beer
EBC (european brewery convention) it is used for color of beer

#### 2. Equations

Equations for US units:
MCU = (Weight of grain in lbs) x (Color of grain in degree lovibond)/(Volume in gallons)

…for metric units:
MCU = (Weight of grain in kg) x (Color of grain in degree lovibond x 2,205)/(Volume in L x 0,264)

…all other equations are:

SRM = 1,4922 x MCU^0,6859

°L = (SRM + 0,76)/1,3546
SRM = (1,3546 x °L) – 0,76
SRM = EBC x 0,508
EBC = ((1,3546 x °L) – 0,76) x 1,97
EBC = SRM x 1,97

#### 3.Calculations

So, how to calculate the color?

##### Example recipe:4 kg/8,82 lbof pale ale (3,8 °L ), 0,2 kg/0,44 lbcara malt 50  (20 °L),0,2 kg/0,44 lbcara malt 120 (45 °L) and0,05 kg/0,11 lbMroost 1400 (530 °L) for end volume20 L/5,28 gal)

Step 1: Calculate MCU for each malt that you have in your recipe and count them together (some values may deffer becouse of approximate conversion from metric to US values, but those differences are very small).

Metric units:
MCU(pale ale) = (4 kg x 3,8 x 2,205)/(20 L x 0,264) = 6,35
MCU(cara malt 50) = (0,2 kg x 20 x 2,205)/(20 L x 0,264) = 1,67
MCU(cara malt 120) = (0,2 kg x 45 x 2,205)/(20 L x 0,264) = 3,76
MCU(mroost 1400) = (0,05 kg x 530 x 2,205)/(20 L x 0,264) = 11,07

MCU(total) = 6,35 + 1,67 + 3,76 + 11,07 = 22,85

US units:
MCU(pale ale) = (8,82 lb x 3,8)/5,28 gal = 6,35

MCU(cara malt 50) = (0,44 lb x 20)/5,28 gal = 1,67
MCU(cara malt 120) = (0,44 lb x 45)/5,28 gal = 3,75
MCU(mroost 1400) = (0,11 lb x 530)/5,28 gal) = 11,04

MCU total = 6,35 + 1,67 + 3,75 + 11,04 = 22,81

Step 2: Calculate SRM and EBC

SRM = 1,4922 x (22,85^0,6859) = 12,76

SRM = 1,4922 x (22,81^0,6859) = 12,76

So, the results (SRM) are the same (based on metric or US values)
Now if we need to calculate EBC:

EBC = 12,76 x 1,97 = 25,14
